Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey surges past Susquehanna 3-1

Andrea Day nets pair in victory

SUNY Oneonta senior Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) scored a pair of goals in leading the Red Dragons past visiting Susquehanna today, 3-1, in nonconference action at All College Field.  The win for Oneonta snapped a mini three-game skid, as they evened its overall record at 3-3.  The loss for the Crusaders dropped them to 5-4 overall.

Day got Oneonta off and running, scoring both her goals in the first 17 minutes of today's contest.  Her first goal came after a shot by classmate Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) was saved but not controlled by Susqeuhanna, as she was able to get her stick on the loose ball and push it to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Her second goal came in the 17th minute, as she was able to lift a shot from the right side that sailed over the goalies' head into the back of the goal.  For Day, it was here fourth and fifth goals of the season.

Oneonta took a 2-0 lead into halftime along with a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in penalty corners.

Oneonta went up 3-0 in the 48th minute when sophomore Bailee Barrett (Camden/Camden) took a pass from junior Hannah Hayward (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) before making a move by the goalie before rifling a shot into the goal.  It was Hayward's third goal of the season.

Susquehanna, who actually carried the play for most of the second half, scored at the 56-minute mark.  Senior Meghan Plunkett deflected a shot by sophomore Emily Novakovich off a penalty corner.

The Crusaders nearly closed the gap to one goal when they were awarded a penalty stroke just one minute later when Oneonta goalie, Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool), froze the ball.  On the ensuing stroke by Katherine Millett, Tracy came up with the right foot kick save to preserve to two-goal lead.  Tracy finished the game with eight saves overall, as she was subbed for with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Oneonta will now prepare for its SUNYAC opener this Friday at home against rival SUNY Cortland.  The game is scheduled for a 4pm start on All College Field.
