Men's Soccer Dominates Ithaca in Season Opener

Red Dragons shutout Bombers 4-0

Box Score SUNY Oneonta junior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) notched a goal and an assist today in leading the Red Dragons to a convincing 4-0 season opening victory against visiting Ithaca College today.  Oneonta outshot the Bombers 17-2 en route to the lopsided win to kickoff the 2014 campaign.

Sutherland got Oneonta on the scoreboard in the 20th minute on a pass from senior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro), as he threaded a pass through the defense.  Sutherland controlled the pass and put a shot in the upper right corner of the goal past the keeper.

The Red Dragons made it 2-0 in the final minute of the first half when freshman Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) registered his first collegiate goal off a through ball from junior Greg Silvestro (West Sayville/Connetquot).  Santangelo then streaked down the left side and put a shot into the lower right corner.

Junior Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and sophomore Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) each collected goals in the second half for the final margin of victory.  Sutherland assisted on Williams' goal while Purtell scored unassisted.

Starting keeper Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) only had to make one save today while two Ithaca keepers combined to make nine saves.

Oneonta will have the week off before hosting RIT in the second game this coming Friday on the first day of the men's Division III Mayor's Cup tournament.  The Red Dragons face the Tigers at 4pm on Red Dragon Soccer Field.
