Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey makes most of opportunities in defeating New Paltz 2-0

If you look at the stat sheet you would think that the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team didn't win today's key match up in the SUNYAC, but when you look at the scoreboard, it was Oneonta 2, New Paltz 0.  The Red Dragons made two of its three shots count while the defense and senior goalie Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) kept the Hawks off the scoreboard.

The win for Oneonta (8-5/4-1 SUNYAC) secured the No. 2 seed while earning a home game for the SUNYAC tournament that begins on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

Tracy came up with six saves in today's contest, many of which were labeled for the back of the goal.  The defense in front of her and behind her in two instances earned Oneonta it's first shutout of the season.

Junior Holly VanDresar (Camden/Camden) came up with two defensive saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.  Her first one came in the third minute of the game on a New Paltz (9-5/3-2 SUNYAC) penalty corner while the second came in the 24th minute, also on a penalty corner.

The first goal for Oneonta came early in the second half off a rush by senior Andrea Day (Greene/Greene), who dodged her way by a couple of defenders before carrying the ball into the circle.  When she got there, she fired a shot towards the left post that classmate Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) redirected to the back of the goal.  It was Forbragd's sixth goal of the year.

The insurance goal for the Red Dragons came in the 54th minute off one of Oneonta's two penalty corners in the game.  Day inserted the ball into junior Hannah Hayward (Glens Falls/Glens Falls), who passed across to senior Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville).  Earle then moved right and drew the defense with her before sending a pass back to Hayward, who one-timed a shot by the New Paltz goalie.

Oneonta hosts No. 11 Skidmore College this Saturday beginning at 1pm.
