Three Members of the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team competed this past weekend at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by William Smith College. The three-day, non-scoring event began on Saturday with first and second round matches in singles and doubles and ran through today with championship matches. For Oneonta, it was the first time since 2004 that members of the women's team competed in the event.
Competing for Oneonta were seniors
Emily Maggiore (Binghamton/Binghamton) and
Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) along with junior
Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury). Maggiore and Sussman competed in singles play while Skolnick paired with Sussman to compete in doubles.
Both Maggiore and Sussman drew seeded players in the opening round of 64 players. Maggiore fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to the No. 8 seed from NYU, Ashley Masanto. Sussman fell in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to the No. 6 seed, Elkie Vandenbeemt of St. Lawrence.
In the consolation bracket, Sussman defeated both Emma Allen, 8-3 of TCNJ and Albina Muzafarova of Bard, 8-2 before falling in the quarterfinals to Jane Selegean of Hunter, 8-3.
Maggiore was defeated by Olivia Ammirati of New Paltz, 8-1, in her first round consolation match, which ended her tournament.
In the doubles bracket, Skolnick and Sussman dropped a close 9-8 match to the No. 8 seeded pair, Lauren Stauffer and Winnie Yeates of Vassar, which dropped them to the consolation side. They then defeated Jessica Cheng and Sofia Madrigal of Drew 8-2 to advance into the quarterfinal round of the bracket. In the quarterfinals, Paige Munroe and Devin Tracy of New Paltz, 9-7, edged the tandem.
The three will rejoin the squad for its final dual match of the fall this coming Saturday at home versus Scranton beginning at 1pm.
