Men's soccer shuts out Cortland 3-0 in SUNYAC opener

Box Score The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team opened its 2013 SUNYAC schedule today with a convincing 3-0 shutout of rival SUNY Cortland on the road.

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Three different players scored goals today, as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team opened its 2013 SUNYAC schedule with a convincing 3-0 shutout of rival SUNY Cortland.  The host Red Dragons fell to 3-5 and 0-1, while the visiting Red Dragons improved to 5-2-2 and 1-0.

Junior goalkeeper Tim Beauvais (Hilton) made 10 saves for Cortland. His counterpart in goal for Oneonta, junior Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), registered one save.

Senior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy), sophomore Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) and freshman Tyler Kirschner (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) tallied Oneonta's goals. Junior Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) recorded two assists, and sophomore Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) added an assist.

"The team is starting to gel and we moved the ball throughout the game," texted coach Iain Byrne.  "We were a constant threat to score.  This is a great start to the conference schedule."

Halberg gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when he converted a 2-on-1 after a Cortland turnover with a shot inside the left post. Six minutes later, Beauvais made a sprawling save on a one-touch shot right in front from Halberg to keep it a 1-0 score.

The visiting Red Dragons made it a 2-0 game in the 53rd minute on Williams' goal. He took a pass from Rivera and one-timed a 20-yard shot that deflected off a defender and past Beauvais. Just one minute later, Beauvais made back-to-back stops on junior Brian Bartichek (Massapequa Park/Massapequa). The first save came at the left post on a penalty kick, and the second stop was on the rebound when Beauvais dove back across the goalmouth to deny Bartichek's follow-up shot.

Kirschner's capped the scoring for Oneonta in the 78th minute with a shot from the left side that found the top right corner of the goal.

Cortland generated a quality chance in the 59th minute, but junior Matt Williams' (Cobleskill/Cobleskill-Richmondville) open shot from 15 yards deflected off a defender and just over the crossbar. In the 76th minute, freshman Jack Sumski (Lindenhurst) sent a header off a corner kick wide of the right post for Cortland.
