Field Hockey's come back falls short

Fall at home to #10 William Smith 3-2

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The SUNY Oneonta Field Hockey team took on their third ranked opponent in consecutive games, falling at home to #10 William Smith 3-2. The loss moves the Red Dragons record to 4-2 overall.

The game started with William Smith (4-0) opening the scoring at the 12:37 mark as Melanie O'Connor picked up a lost ball in the circle after a scramble to put it past Oneonta goalkeeper, Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool). Julia Simmons added a second goal less than seven minutes later as she took the pass for Cory Connolly and maneuvered around before scoring off a back hand shot.

Oneonta would pull one back before the halftime break when Kelcy Forbragd (Camden/Camden) tucked home a shot that hit the post and deflected to her. Forbragd currently leads the team in goals seven.

The Herons would add an insurance goal in the 48th minute when Amy David picked up a loose ball about 10 yards out and fired home a shot to put William Smith up 3-1.

The Red Dragons picked up the pressure as junior Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville) scored her second goal of the season. Senior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) took the penalty corner pass from Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) and touched it to her right to Earle. Earle ripped the shot past the Heron's goalie, Amy Feda, to pull Oneonta to within one but time ran out before Oneonta could counter again.

William Smith outshot the Red Dragons 16-6 and had four more penalty corners (12-8).

Tracy made ten saves in the game, many of the outstanding variety, while her counterpart Feda made two.

Oneonta will play host this Wednesday, September 18th when they take on Ithaca in non-conference action for a game starting at 4 p.m.
