Box Score 4 The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team traveled south for its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, SC. The Red Dragons competed in four matches and came away with a pair of victories against some solid competition including Division II Erskine College.
Oneonta (3-9) opened its trip last Tuesday with a 5-4 win versus Virginia Wesleyan University. The Red Dragons found themselves behind, 2-1 after doubles before rallying with four wins in singles to pull out the victory. Wins in the match came at first doubles and first, third, fourth and fifth singles. Junior Michael Kennelly and sophomore Mackenzie Park each picked up a pair of wins in the match. Kennelly won in straight sets at first singles while Park won in straight sets at fourth singles. The two also paired to win at first doubles 8-2.
Junior Benjamin Leighton and senior Adam Slifkin both won in straight sets at third and fifth singles respectively.
Later in the day, Oneonta fell 6-3 to Carroll University. Park and Slifkin each won in singles in a super tie-break set. Leighton teamed with freshman Tyler Crill to win, 9-8 (6) at second doubles.
Oneonta then defeated the University of Scranton 5-4 on Thursday. Once again, the Red Dragons found themselves behind 2-1 in doubles and had to rally for the victory. Kennelly and Leighton each won in straight sets at first and third singles respectively while Park and Slifkin needed a third set tie-breaker to decide the match for Oneonta.
Slifkin also teamed with freshman Trevor Mitchel to win at third doubles 8-6. For Mitchel, it was his first collegiate win.
In the final match of the trip, Oneonta battled Erskine College to the end, but was upended 6-3 in the end. Slifkin and Mitchel earned a point at third doubles with an 8-5 win. Slifkin and Park were Oneonta's victors in singles play in straight sets.
The men will continue its spring schedule this weekend with matches at Wheaton College on Friday and versus Baruch College on Saturday. Saturday's match will be played at the U.S. Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
