Men's soccer pulls out tie against #7 Brockport

Box Score Playing a man down for the final 6:32 of regulation and for twenty minutes of overtime, the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team used late-game heroics to come out with a draw against No. 7 Brockport today in a battle between the two top teams in the SUNYAC entering the match.

Both squads were 3-0 in conference play before the contest and both riding an unbeaten streak.  Oneonta is now unbeaten in its last nine contests (6-0-3), as they are now 7-2-3 overall.  Brockport remains unbeaten for the season at 8-0-3 overall.

For the second consecutive match, it was a late goal for Oneonta that pushed the game into overtime.  Today, it was sophomore Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) who scored the equalizer with 44 seconds remaining in regulation.  With Oneonta pressing forward to tie the game, sophomore Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) dropped a short pass back to Williams who blasted a shot that deflected off a defenders foot and away from the keeper into the back of the goal.

Today's match had the feel of a SUNYAC tournament contest with both teams playing end-to-end soccer with solid play at both ends of the field.  The final shots in the contest were 14-12 in favor of Oneonta.  The Red Dragons did hold a decided 11-5 advantage in corner kicks, but were unable to convert.

Brockport's goal came in the 84th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick after a handball violation in the box.  Senior Bobby Ross stepped up and converted the kick to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

In SUNYAC regular season play; the two teams participate in a shootout if the game is still tied at the end of both overtime periods for potential tiebreaker situations if they arise come tournament-seeding time.  Brockport ended up taking the shootout 5-3, as keeper Casey Sullivan was able to stop Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy)'s kick with the Golden Eagles up 3-2.  Sullivan made eight stops in today's game for Brockport.

Oneonta will be at home again next weekend, as Plattsburgh and SUNY Potsdam come to town.  The Red Dragons will play Plattsburgh on Friday at 4pm and Potsdam on Saturday beginning at 1pm.
