Men's soccer slips past SUNY Geneseo 2-1 in overtime

Rivera goal lifts Red Dragons past Blue Knights

Box Score Junior Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) was in the right place at the right time to knock home a rebound to lift the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory today against SUNY Geneseo in overtime.  The play was created by senior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy), who sent a ball across that deflected off the keepers hands away in front that Rivera was able to get to first and push a shot underneath to the back of the goal for the win in the first minute of the second overtime period.

Late in the second half, the game looked like SUNY Geneseo (5-5-2/2-1 SUNYAC) would steal a road win, as they led 1-0 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

What looked like a harmless ball rolling in the box turned into a game-tying goal by sophomore Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) in the 87th minute.  It appeared that the keeper and a SUNY Geneseo defender miscommunicated, which allowed Sutherland to break in alone on the keeper.  Sutherland slipped a shot passed the keeper into the far right corner to tie the game at 1-1.

SUNY Geneseo scored its goal midway through the first half on a shot that looked like it deflected off the head of an Oneonta defender.  Junior Connor Beisner sent a shot in from the right flank outside the box, which changed direction slightly and found its way to the back of the goal.

Oneonta (7-2-2/3-0 SUNYAC) held a 16-10 advantage in shots including 9-4 three periods of play.

Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) made five saves in picking up his third win of the season.  Blue Knights keeper, Logan Calvey, made seven saves in goal in taking his first loss of the season.

Oneonta will be home again tomorrow to face Brockport at home beginning at 1pm.  Both Oneonta and Brockport are 3-0 in conference play entering the match.
