The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team travelled to Oswego today for the final regular season SUNYAC conference game and walked away with a 3-0 victory. With the win, the Red Dragons have secured the fourth spot in the SUNYAC Championship tournament to be held at top seed SUNY Cortland. Oneonta will play the host in the opening game of the tournament on November 8th at 11 a.m.
In today's game, Oneonta (11-6/3-3 SUNYAC) scored all three of their goals in the opening half of the game. It all started in the 9th minute when the Red Dragons earned a penalty corner.
Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) took the ensuing corner and passed the ball to senior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) at the top of the arc. Morgan touched it to her left to
Sierra Earle (Baldwinsville/Baldwinsville), who hammered home the ball for the games first goal.
Earle would be the playmaker on the second goal as her initial shot that was saved by Oswego's goalie, Priscilla Paulose, but Earle would pick up the loose ball. After a quick move, Earle passed the ball to an open teammate,
Sara Rattigan (Stormville/Carmel). Rattigan drove the ball home in the bottom left hand side to give the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The final goal of the afternoon came at the 24:29 mark as Day used some fancy stick work and popped the ball up over the goalie after going one-on-one with Paulose.
Oneonta held Oswego to five shots total and only one in the first half on the afternoon, while the Red Dragons had 14 including 10 in the opening period. Oswego held a slight advantage 7-6 in penalty corners.
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool), the starting goalie, didn't have to make a save in the first 35 minutes.
Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) came in at halftime and had three saves in the second half.
Oneonta will be in action again this Wednesday, October 30th when they travel to Utica College for a 4 p.m. start.
