Men's soccer pulls out another late-game victory

Saljanin nets game-winner for Red Dragons

Box Score The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team is certainly keeping the fans at the game, as for the second time in the last three matches, the Red Dragons pulled out a late-game victory.  Today, sophomore Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) scored with three seconds left in the second overtime to left the Red Dragons to a 2-1 win against Plattsburgh.

The game-winning goal came on an indirect kick sent into the box by sophomore Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury).  In the mass of players that were in the box, it was Saljanin that was able to get his head on the ball and push it past a sprawling goalkeeper.  For Saljanin, he entered the game for the first time at the beginning of the second overtime period.

"Another great fight back against a tough opponent," said coach Iain Byrne.  "The ending was a little harsh for Plattsburgh and they didn't deserve to lose today."

Oneonta (8-2-3/4-0-1), which extended its current unbeaten streak to 10 games, trailed in the game for a third straight match before getting a late equalizer to force overtime.

Behind 1-0, it was Williams who got his head on a crossing pass from classmate Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) in the 78th minute to tie the score.  Williams was able to direct the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.

Plattsburgh (8-3-1/2-2 SUNYAC) was holding onto its 1-0 lead that came on a goal in the 11th minute of the match by senior Tom Greene.  Greene took a pass from the left flank from sophomore Fabian Chaparro, turned, and put a floater into the upper right corner of the goal.

Both goalkeepers were up to the task this afternoon, keeping the score as it was with many fine stops.  Oneonta keeper, Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), made seven saves in picking up his fourth win of the season while his counterpart, Mitchell Jordon, made nine stops.

Oneonta will look to extend its unbeaten streak to 11 games tomorrow when they host SUNY Potsdam at 1pm.
