Men's soccer upends Vassar on the road 2-1

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Senior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) scored his first two goals of the season today in leading the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team to a dominating road win at Vassar.  The win was the third straight for the Red Dragons, who have rebounded nicely after beginning the season 0-2-1.  Oneonta is starting to gel as they enter the SUNYAC portion of its schedule this Friday at home versus Oswego.

The Red Dragons fiercely attacked the Vassar goal in the first half to the tune of 13 shots while holding the Brewers to only four shots.  The final tally for the Red Dragons was 21 shots and 15 corners as they took it to the Brewers, who fell to 5-2 overall.

"It was a real contrast in styles," said coach Byrne via text.  "We play a great passing style of football and we created numerous chances in the first half with opportunities to increase our lead.  In the second half, Vassar was more direct with longs balls and throws into the box, but our defense withstood the pressure.  It was a well deserved win."

The Vassar defense could do nothing to prevent the first goal, which came in the eighth minute when midfielder Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) blasted a low shot, which was saved by the Vassar keeper. However, the diving save left a loose ball, which Fortier put to the back of the goal for the early 1-0 lead.

Both teams continued to battle for control of the game throughout the half, yet it was Oneonta who struck again in the 41st minute to double its lead. The goal came when Fortier received a through ball in the box and struck it into the lower left corner. The goal was his second of the game and season.

The Brewers only goal came less than two minutes into the second half by sophomore Tom Weichert as Vassar cut Oneonta's lead in half early.  The Brewers pressed, but the Oneonta defense was up to the task as they secured a key road win in the Region.

Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS) made four saves in goal for Oneonta while Ryan Grimme had eight saves for Vassar in the loss.
