The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team began its non-traditional fall season this past weekend when it competed in the two-day Flower City Tournament hosted by the University of Rochester.  The Red Dragons came back with a fourth place finish after going 1-2 at the event that began on Saturday and concluded yesterday afternoon.

Oneonta opened its weekend with a 5-1 win against the Rochester Institute of Technology.  The Red Dragons captured wins at first and second double and then won three more point in singles to clinch the match.

Junior Michael Kennelly and freshman Tyler Crill earned three of Oneonta's five points in the match.  The two paired to win at first doubles 8-2.  They then each earned points at first and second singles respectively in straight sets.

Junior Benjamin Leighton and sophomore Mackenzie Park won at second doubles, 8-6.  Oneonta's final point came at fifth singles by senior Adam Slifkin, who won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Leighton and Park would win again at second singles versus Rochester by the score of 8-2.  The Red Dragons' other point came from Kennelly at first singles in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1.

In the match versus St. Lawrence, Oneonta trailed after doubles play 2-1 with Kennelly and Crill winning at first doubles 8-3.

Kennelly and Crill won again at the top of the lineup to earn a couple of the points for Oneonta.  After dropping the first set, 6-3, Kennelly came back to win the next two sets, 6-0, 6-3, to win the match.  Slifkin won at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-4 to keep Oneonta even at four apiece.

Unfortunately, Brett Ringelheim had to retire in the third set of his match, trailing 4-0, which allowed the Saints to earn the winning point.

The men will not be in action again until Wednesday, Sep. 26 when they will travel to Schenectady to face Union College beginning at 4pm.
