Freshman David Goldberg won a super tiebreak set 10-8 at first singles to clinch a 5-4 win for the Oneonta State men's tennis team today against Rensselaer. The two teams went to the edge of darkness before the Red Dragons finally pulled out the match as they are now 11-5 on the year. The loss for the Engineers drops them back to the .500 mark at 7-7.
Rensselaer won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. Sophomore Jarrett Regier and freshman Brandon Mazzara won at first doubles, 8-1, versus Goldberg and classmate Mackenzie Park. Freshman Will Dickie and sophomore Andre Vorbrodt won at third doubles, 8-3, over seniors Adam Slifkin and Joey Milstein.
Seniors Joshua Slifkin and Adam Shapiro won 8-3 at second doubles for Oneonta versus seniors Kyle Borton and Patrick Russo.
In addition to Goldberg, Milstein, and both Slifkins were victorious. Milstein won at fourth singles in a third set tiebreak (6-1, 2-6, 7-6(5)). Joshua Slifkin won in straight sets at fifth singles while his brother, Adam, won in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-4).
Mazzara and Dickie were the winners for Rensselaer at second and third singles.
Oneonta will be home this Saturday for a match versus St. John Fisher beginning at 1pm.
