The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team avenged itself today in defeating Plattsburgh, 5-2, to claim third place at this year's SUNYAC championships held at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Earlier this fall, the Cardinals had defeated Oneonta 5-4 in an East Division match. Oneonta (8-4) was the No. 3 seed from the East Division going into this weekend while Plattsburgh was the No. 2 seed from the East.
The Red Dragons found themselves down 2-1 after the doubles portion of the match. The lone victory came at third doubles, as the junior duo of
Colette Lankowicz (Sayville/Sayville) and
Emily Maggiore (Binghamton/Binghamton) defeated Stephanie Omlin and Sam Fasciano 8-5.
Lankowicz also picked up a key win during singles, as she beat Jackie Bogdon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at fifth singles. The win for Lankowicz was her team leading ninth of the year.
The top of the singles lineup came through for Oneonta with the other three points that secured the five points and the win. Senior
Danielle Browarski (Colonie/Colonie), sophomore
Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) and junior
Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) won at first, second and third singles respectively. Sussman and Skolnick each won in straight sets while Browarski had to go into a third set, super tiebreak to 10 points, which she won 10-3 over Rachel Hodnett.
Today's match completes the fall portion of the women's tennis schedule. The Red Dragons will begin the spring portion of the schedule on Saturday, Mar. 2 when they will be at William Smith.
