The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team will be streaking heading into this weekend's SUNYAC tournament at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Red Dragons won its fourth straight match today versus Hartwick, 7-2. Oneonta is now 6-3 overall while the Hawks fell to 5-6 in dual matches.
The SUNYAC tournament begins on Friday with four quarterfinal matches. Oneonta, who finished in third place in the East Division, will take on Brockport, who is the No. 2 seed from the West. That match will begin 1:00pm. The winner will advance into the semifinals on Saturday versus the winner of the New Paltz/Oswego match. The championship is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm. The SUNYAC champion will receive the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament in the spring.
In today's match with Hartwick, Oneonta jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles. The Red Dragons surrendered only eight games in doubles, which included an 8-2 win at first doubles by senior
Danielle Browarski (Colonie/Colonie) and junior
Lauren Skolnick (Sayville/Sayville) over Nicole Schepisi and Lysandra Tetreault.
Oneonta had to shift its singles lineup due to a couple of injuries sustained during doubles play, but still managed to win four of the six matches. Skolnick won at second singles, 6-2, 6-1 over Lauren Michels. Other winners for Oneonta were juniors
Emily Maggiore (Binghamton/Binghamton) and
Colette Lankowicz (Sayville/Sayville) at third and fourth singles respectively. Classmate
Abigail Smith (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) won a super tiebreak third set to defeat Kristen Napolitano, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
Hartwick's two wins today came at first and sixth singles. Schepisi defeated freshman
Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) at first singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Ruth Jones went to a third set, super tiebreak before putting away freshman
Kelly Gochan (Lake Grove/Sachem North), 6-0, 1-6, 11-9.
