The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team totally controlled today's home game versus Union College en route to a 4-1 victory. Oneonta (11-6) out shot the Dutchwomen, 21-6, while holding a decided advantage in penalty corners 15-3.
The Red Dragons got on the scoreboard first today as junior
Samantha Smith (Webster/Webster Thomas) scored an unassisted goal in the ninth minute of the match. Smith was able to collect a rebound in front of the goal before slipping it by the Union goalie.
Union (7-9) came back and tied the score on an unassisted goal by junior Nicole Merigliano on a reverse stick shot that beat Oneonta goalie
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool). Tracy played 60 minutes today and recorded her 10 win of the season.
Four minutes later, senior
Ashley Johnson (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) took a pass and moved enough to turn herself to get a shot off that went to the back of the goal. The goal came in the 21st minute and gave the Red Dragons the lead for good.
In the second half, junior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) scored a pair of goals, which were both assisted by Johnson. The goals came off corners where the two worked a couple of passes before Morgan finished them off. The first goal was a redirect of a pass by Johnson while the second goal was a direct shot off the pass.
Oneonta will finish its regular season at home tomorrow afternoon when they host Rensselaer at 3pm.
