Men's soccer runs away from Fredonia 7-0

Box Score One win down and one to go for the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team as they kept themselves alive for the top seed in the SUNYAC tournament, which begins next Saturday.  A win tomorrow coupled with a tie between Plattsburgh and Brockport will give the Red Dragons the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.  A win for either Brockport or Plattsburgh will earn the winner the top seed.

After taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, the floodgates opened and Oneonta (10-5-1/6-2 SUNYAC) poured it on to the tune of six goals for the final of 7-0.  The offensive output was the Red Dragons' largest since Sep. 1, 2009 when they put 10 up versus SUNY Cobleskill.

Junior Luke Halberg (Norwich/Valley Heights Christian Academy) and freshman Zef Saljanin (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) each registered a pair of goals for Oneonta today.  Halberg scored his team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season while Saljanin scored his first two collegiate goals.

Sophomore Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) and freshman Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's) each had one goal and one assist, as did senior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington).

Oneonta completely dominated with a 24-4 shot advantage and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Fredonia had two shots in each half.  The two first half shots came in the first seven minutes of the match and actually were in close.  Starter Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS) saved one shot and the other flew over the goal.

Oneonta will wrap up its regular season at home tomorrow versus Buffalo State.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.
