Field Hockey stalled by Cortland in strokes

Oneonta has four-game win streak snapped

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team improved to 3-0 in SUNYAC play and 6-3 overall with a 1-0 victory in penalty strokes over visiting Oneonta. The teams were scoreless through 70 minutes of regulation and two 15-minute overtimes. Cortland won 5-2 in penalty strokes to earn a “team” goal and win the game. Oneonta is now 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Both goalkeepers officially earned shutouts. Cortland junior Emily von Schondorf (Webster/Webster Thomas) made six saves and Oneonta freshman Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) (Liverpool/Liverpool) finished with 16 saves. In addition, Schondorf stopped four of Oneonta's penalty strokes, although no plays during strokes count toward official stats.

Penalty strokes started with five for each team in alternating fashion. Cortland's Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) converted on the first attempt, but the next five shots (three for Oneonta, two for Cortland) either missed or were stopped. On Cortland's fourth stroke, sophomore Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) found the cage to put Cortland up 2-0. Oneonta, however, made its last two strokes – shots by Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury/Queensbury) (Queensbury/Queensbury) and Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) (Greene/Greene) – sandwiched around a stop by Tracy to force another set of five strokes.

In the second set of strokes, von Schondorf stopped all three of Oneonta's attempts, while Cortland converted all three of its tries – shots by Vdoviak, Erin Smith (Greene) and the clincher by Barbagallo.

During regulation and overtime, Cortland outshot Oneonta, 31-17, and held a slight 18-15 penalty corner advantage. Each team had good chances to score in each half of regulation. Oneonta's Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) had a shot in the first half hit the right post, and the ball remained right near the goal line before being cleared away by the defense. Cortland's Sara Woodward (Ancram/Pine Plains) also hit the post on a redirected shot in the opening half.

Early in the second half, Vdoviak blasted a shot past Tracy, but Camp was perfectly positioned on the goal line and made a defensive save. With about seven minutes left in regulation, Camp took a hard shot from the right side that hit the netting on the side of the cage.

In the 7-on-7 overtime periods, Cortland took 16 shots, but Tracy made nine saves. One of those saves came on a Woodward breakaway with less than three minutes left. Five of Oneonta's six overtime shots came in the final 15-minute period, but von Schondorf stopped four of them.

Cortland will host New Paltz Saturday at 1 p.m. and Oneonta will play at Oswego Saturday at 1 p.m. in SUNYAC contests.
