Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey drops heartbreaker to Oswego 3-2

Warning and Morgan tally for Red Dragons

Box Score

OSWEGO, N.Y.—Despite outshooting and out-cornering the host Lakers today in tough weather conditions, the Oneonta State field hockey team was defeated by Oswego, 3-2.  The loss for Oneonta (6-4/1-2 SUNYAC) was its second consecutive tough loss while the win for Oswego (3-8/1-3 SUNYAC was its first in conference play in 2011.

After a goal in the second minute gave Oswego an early 1-0 lead, Oneonta's Putnam Valley duo of juniors Megan Warning (Lake Peeksill/Putnam Valley) (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) and Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) put the Red Dragons ahead 2-1 on a couple of unassisted goals.

Oneonta seemed to have completely seized momentum in the game until Oswego freshman Lindsey Spatola (Holbrook, N.Y.) posted her first collegiate goal eight minutes before intermission to knot the match at 2-2.  The teams went into the break tied despite the Red Dragons holding a 10-6 edge in shots and an 11-5 margin in penalty corners.

Oneonta came out reinvigorated in the second half, getting off 12 shots and earning seven penalty corners, but were unable to end the tie.  As time dwindled, Collins took a shot that went wide of the cage.  On the ensuing clear attempt by the Red Dragons, Kelly Collins (Fairport) intercepted an errant pass, dribbled into the circle, and laced a shot past keeper Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) (Liverpool/Liverpool) with 1:39 to play for her second goal of the contest.

Oneonta put together one final charge as it was awarded a penalty corner in the final minute.  However, Oswego State goalie Julie Janusz (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) stopped Morgan's shot for her 11th save of the game to preserve the win.

Oneonta returns to action this Tuesday night when they host Hamilton beginning at 6pm.
