ONEONTA, NY—A man up goal by junior
Blair Hanson (Fayetteville/Fayetteville Manlius) with 27 seconds left in regulation pulled SUNY Oneonta to within one goal, but time ran out on the Red Dragons today as they fell 14-13 to visiting SUNY Potsdam today in SUNYAC action. Oneonta (1-8/0-2) won the ensuing faceoff and got two shots off, but one went wide and the second was saved by Potsdam goalie, Pat Corbine, with 14 seconds left.
Today's game was a back-and-forth contest with runs by both teams and five lead changes. The final lead change came in the third period when Potsdam took an 11-10 lead.
Oneonta jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes capped by an even strength goal by freshman Danny Stern with an assist from classmate
Sal Valenti (Syracuse/Westhill). Stern finished the game with one goal and three assists.
Potsdam (5-6/2-0) closed the opening period with three unanswered goals including one by junior Ryan Paparella with 22 seconds left.
The Bears would continue its momentum into the second period with the first two goals to take a 5-4 lead. Junior Zeppy O'Geen scored the Bears fifth goal at the 13:31 mark.
The Red Dragons regrouped and tallied back-to-back goals to regain the lead at 6-5. Sophomore
Mike Salerno (West Babylon/West Babylon) and senior
Brian Kollar (East Islip/East Islip) scored for Oneonta as they took its one-goal lead into halftime.
Potsdam stormed out of halftime and scored the first four goals to take a 9-6 lead. The final goal came at the 12:14 mark by senior Sean McAuliffe.
Oneonta then ran off four straight goals to take back the lead at 10-9. Sophomore
John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) scored a pair during the run including a man up goal to pull Oneonta to within one goal at 9-8.
Potsdam once again put together a late run to end the period to take a 12-11 advantage into the fourth period.
McAuliffe scored a man up goal to start the fourth period to put the Bears up 13-11. Salerno pulled Oneonta back to within one goal at the 6:13 mark before Potsdam went ahead by two goals less than one minute later.
Senior Pat Corbine made 14 saves in goal for Potsdam while his counterpart,
Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius), made nine saves.
Oneonta will be at home this coming Tuesday evening when they host city rival Hartwick for a contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
