BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team started fast, but could hold the lead today as they fell to the College at Brockport 14-13 in SUNYAC action. Freshman Joey Finnegan (West Islip/West Islip) and sophomore Mike Salerno (West Babylon/West Babylon) each scored three goals in the contest for Oneonta (3-9/1-3 SUNYAC). Finnegan also added an assist while sophomore Jimmy van de Veerdonk added two goals and a pair of assists.

Van de Veerdonk also won 20-of-31 face offs while collecting 16 ground balls.

Oneonta held a 6-1 lead at the end of the first period. A Daniel Stern (Shoreham/Shoreham-Wading River) goal to start the second period put the Red Dragons up 7-1. Salerno and Finnegan both scored a pair of goals during the outburst.

Brockport (5-7/2-3 SUNYAC) began to cut into Oneonta's lead to where the score was 8-6 at halftime.

Junior Ryan Gifford (Latham/Shaker) scored an unassisted goal for the Red Dragons to open the third period before the Golden Eagles ran off five straight goals to take an 11-9 lead with 4:33 remaining in the third. Back-to-back goals by van de Veerdonk and Salerno got Oneonta to even at the end of the period.

Finnegan's final goal of the game gave Oneonta a 12-11 lead, but three unanswered goals by Brockport put the Red Dragons in a 14-12 hole. Van de Veerdonk brought Oneonta back to 14-13 with 56 seconds to go and won the ensuing face off to give the Red Dragons the possession.

Oneonta got three shots off including one that hit the post by John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) with 21 seconds to go, but Brockport was able to clear the ball and kill enough time on the clock where Oneonta ran out of time.

Oneonta will play its final home game of the regular season this Wednesday against Plattsbugh beginning at 4:00 p.m. Oneonta needs to win its final two games of the season to have a chance to qualify for the SUNYAC tournament.
