ONEONTA, N.Y.—Sophomore Jimmy van de Veerdonk scored three goals over the final 4:09 to lift the SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team to a 12-10 win tonight against city rival Hartwick College. Oneonta (2-8) trailed 10-9 before van de Veerdonk's heroics brought victory to snap the Red Dragons five-game losing streak.

Van de Veerdonk finished the game with five goals and one assist while classmate John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) added three goals and one assist.

The largest lead for either team was by Oneonta at 9-6 when Tyler Jennings (Brewerton/Central Square) scored the opening goal of the fourth period. Jennings finished the contest with one goal and a pair of assists.

Hartwick (5-7) ran off four straight goals to gain its 10-9 lead with 4:11 remaining in the game. Sophomore Harry Hughes scored two of the goals while Joe Shields scored one and assisted on Hughes' first goal, which came with a man up.

Hughes finished the game with three goals while Shields had three goals and one assist to lead the Hawks.

Hartwick scored the opening two goals of the game before Oneonta stormed back with three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead. The run was capped by van de Veerdonk's first goal of the game at 9:32 of the second period.

A man up goal by freshman Phil Schaefer with 54 seconds to go in the second period tied the score at five apiece as that's where the score would remain going into halftime.

Oneonta will be at Oswego this Saturday for a SUNYAC match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
