POTSDAM, N.Y.—Sophomore Jimmy van de Veerdonk (Putnam Valley, Putnam Valley) scored four goals and added one assist, but it wasn't enough as the SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team fell at Clarkson in the season opener for both squads.

The Red Dragons led just once in the contest, 2-1, late in the first quarter on back-to-back goals by Brian Kollar (East Islip, East Islip) and Scott Kellman (Suffern, Suffern). The first quarter ended with some fireworks in the final minute as three goals were scored, two by the hosts and one by van der Veerdonk with 17 seconds left in the opening 15 minutes.

The Golden Knights ran off three straight goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead before van der Veerdonk's second score of the game cut the lead back to 6-4. Clarkson notched two more goals to take an 8-4 lead until van der Veerdonk scored a man down goal and Kellman scored an even strength goal in the final 1:30 of the second quarter. The Red Dragons found themselves down 8-6 at the break.

Oneonta continued to trail by a pair of goals entering the final quarter before battling back to tie the score at 13 apiece on an unassisted goal by Kollar at the 9:40 mark. Clarkson closed out the game with the final four scores of the contest for the final margin of victory.

Kollar and Kellman both finished the game with three goals. Kollar also added a pair of assists for five points.

Junior Chris Miles (Manlius, Fayetteville Manlius) and senior Sean Reynolds (Bethpage, Bethpage) split the game in goal for Oneonta. Miles made nine saves while Reynolds, who took the loss, made six saves.

Oneonta will play at Union this Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
