It came down to the final relay and sophomore
Connor Vander Plaat (Chester/Warwick) of Oneonta out-touched Alex Spatzer of SUNY Cortland by .11 seconds in 1:32.19 to gain enough points for the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons to defeat its rival 122-121 in dual-meet action today at the G. Hal Chase Pool. The Oneonta men are now 2-2 as they enter the semester break. SUNY Cortland falls to 1-3 in dual meets as they enter its semester break.
The dual-meet win for Oneonta was the first dual-meet win versus Cortland since the men's team was elevated back to varsity status in 1998.
Leading Oneonta today was junior
Alex Miller and sophomore
Ryan Walsh (Wingdale/Arlington) as they both won two individual events each while swimming a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay to start the meet for the men. Miller and Walsh teamed with junior
Scott Bertoldo (Attica/Attica) and Vander Plaat to win the 200 medley relay in a new pool record time of 1:40.76.
Miller won both the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:02.99 while he took first in the 100-yard backstroke in a pool record time of 54.46.
Walsh won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:50.20 and then followed later with a new pool record in taking first place in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 52.84.
Other event winners for Oneonta today included freshman
Daniel Donaghy (Holtsville/Sachem East) in the 1,000-yard freestyle and sophomore
Jermaine Miller (Elmira/Southside ) in the 1-meter, five dives session.
For the Cortland men, they had four individuals win events today. Junior Dan Maximowicz won the 50-yard freestyle, senior Judd Simon won the 100-yard freestyle, sophomore Matt Distler won the 500-yard freestyle and senior Danny Salvatore won the 100-yard breaststroke.
Cortland closed the meet by setting an Oneonta pool record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:30.90.
Oneonta will not be in action again for five weeks, as they will host Skidmore for a dual meet on Tuesday, Jan. 17 beginning at 1pm.
