Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) (Greene/Greene) scored her team-best fifth game-winning goal in lifting the Oneonta State field hockey team to a 3-2 win against New Paltz in the semifinals of the 2011 SUNYAC tournament hosted by Cortland. Oneonta (14-6) will now face its rival Red Dragons in the championship game tomorrow beginning at 1pm. The winner will receive the conference's first automatic qualification to the NCAA Div. III tournament, which begins on Nov. 9 with first round games.
Day's winning goal was at the tail end of a penalty corner for Oneonta. She was able to deflect a shot out of the air that appeared to be heading wide behind the New Paltz goalie. The assist went to senior
Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury/Queensbury) (Queensbury/Queensbury), who scored the other two goals for the Red Dragons for a five-point game.
Camp's two goals came in the first half as the Red Dragons held a 2-0 lead at the halftime. Junior
Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) assisted on both goals as the scores came off penalty corners. The first goal came in the 10th minute and the second came just under 10 minutes later.
New Paltz (8-10), who finished the game with a 13-5 shot advantage, turned up the pressure early in the second half and worked its way back to 2-2 less than 13 minutes into the second half.
Alicia Aragosa scored both goals for the Hawks. Her first goal was a one-timer just inside the left post from eight yards out. The second goal came off a rebound. Oneonta goalies,
Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) (Liverpool/Liverpool) made the initial stop on a shot by Stacey Miller, but Aragosa was there to knock the rebound into the back of the goal.
Tracy finished the game with six saves.
In the second year of the SUNYAC tournament, Oneonta is making its first appearance in the championship game. The Red Dragons have never won a SUNYAC title and they will be playing for its fourth trip to the NCAA tournament, which they haven't been to since 1992.
