Field hockey tripped up in SUNYAC championship game

Red Dragons fall in overtime to Cortland

Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Erin Smith (Greene) scored with four minutes, 57 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lead the top-seeded Cortland field hockey team to a 2-1 win over second-seeded Oneonta Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the 2011 SUNYAC Field Hockey Tournament.  The host Red Dragons improved to 12-6 on the season, earning the automatic NCAA Div. III playoff bid and their 13th consecutive NCAA tournament showing, while the visiting Red Dragons fell to 14-7.

Junior Katie Barbagallo (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied Cortland's first goal, and Smith, who was chosen as the Tournament MVP, also collected an assist. Junior Brianna Petronio (Holland Patent) recorded her fifth defensive save of the season, and junior goalie Emily von Schondorf (Webster/Webster Thomas) made 11 saves.

Junior Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) scored Oneonta's goal, while freshman goalie Tess Tracy (Liverpool/Liverpool) (Liverpool/Liverpool) registered six saves.

Morgan gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead at the nine minute, 56 second mark of the game when she blasted a 10-yard straight-on shot into the lower corner for her 12th goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later, Barbagallo tied the score as she deflected Greene's pass into the bottom corner.  Barbagallo had another chance just over a minute later, but her open deflection on junior Sara Woodward's (Ancram/Pine Plains) cross slid just wide of the post. Petronio kept the game tied at 24:39 when she made a defensive save on Oneonta junior Megan Warning's (Lake Peeksill/Putnam Valley) (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) shot that squirted through von Schondorf's pads.

Cortland generated the first good chances of the second half with back-to-back shots just over 20 minutes in that resulted in a save and a block by Oneonta. With 6:49 left in regulation, the visiting Red Dragons nearly grabbed the lead, but freshman Andrea Day (Greene/Greene) (Greene/Greene) sent a deflection wide of the post.

Smith scored the game winner at 81:03, knocking a five-yard shot on a loose ball into the lower corner to give Cortland the sudden-victory win.

Joining Smith on the All-Tournament Team were Barbagallo, Woodward, junior Danielle Groneman (East Islip) and freshman Erica Wharton (Putnam Valley) of Cortland; Morgan, senior Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury/Queensbury) (Queensbury/Queensbury) and freshman Chelsea Remling (Mahopac/Lakeland) (Mahopac/Lakeland) of Oneonta; senior Abby Sayler (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and sophomore Bridget McGovern (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) of Geneseo; and sophomores Lauren Link (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) and Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady/Niskayuna) of New Paltz.
