Men's soccer defeats New Paltz to extend unbeaten streak

Red Dragons remain unbeaten atop SUNYAC

Box Score Box Score

All of the scoring in today's SUNYAC match between Oneonta State and New Paltz came in the first half with the host Red Dragons getting the better of the visiting Hawks, 2-1, in front of more than 500 alums, family and friends on Homecoming Saturday.  The Red Dragons are now unbeaten in its last 12 games while remaining unbeaten atop the SUNYAC standings.

Oneonta (10-2-2/6-0-1 SUNYAC) actually trailed 1-0 in today's match.  New Paltz's Michael Santalesa (New Hyde Park) took a pass from senior Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill) and then blasted a shot over the head on Oneonta keeper, Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn/Roslyn) (Roslyn/Roslyn).

Oneonta didn't waste anytime in tying the score as less than one minute later senior Raymond Fitzpatrick (Garden City/Garden City) (Garden City/Garden City) collected a loose ball at the top of the arc just outside the box and drilled a shot that hit the cross bar, deflected straight down, before going into the goal.

The game-winner today came 15 minutes later by junior Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) (Pleasant Valley/Arlington), who notched his team-leading eighth goal of the season.  Senior Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) started the play as he broke free with the ball and got into the box where he sent a pass across to Fortier.  Fortier was able to slide a shot by the New Paltz keeper into the lower right corner of the goal.

The shots were even at 12 apiece while Oneonta held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Oneonta will end its regular season next weekend on the road as they travel to Buffalo State on Friday and Fredonia on Saturday.  The Red Dragons are still in a battle with Brockport for the regular season title in the SUNYAC and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.  Oneonta holds a one-point lead entering the final weekend of play for both squads.
