ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta men continued its strong showing at the annual Flower City Tournament this weekend by winning the overall championship. After receiving a bye as the top seed in the tournament, they defeated both Hobart and Roberts Wesleyan by identical scores of 5-2 to win the title, its first since 2002. The Red Dragons had been runner up at this tournament three of the last four years, with the fourth year being the consolation bracket winners.

In the Red Dragons opening match against Hobart, the team trailed 2-1 after the doubles matches. Oneonta clinched the match by winning at 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th singles to put the Statesmen away 5-2.

Freshman Michael Kennelly (Irvington) led the way with a pair of wins on the day. He won 8-5 at second doubles with his partner, John Taft (Queensbury). He then came back and won in straight sets at first singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

In addition to Kennelly, singles winners for Oneonta in the match included, senior William Sacco (Canandaigua) at #2, junior Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway) at #3 and Dan Evans (Dix Hills) at #4.

In the championship match on Sunday, Oneonta came out of the doubles ahead 2-1. Kennelly and Taft were winners again at #2 doubles, posing an 8-6 win. Shapiro and Evans paired up to win 8-5 at #3 doubles.

In Singles, Kennelly recorded a straight set win at the top by the scores of 7-5, 6-2. Senior Jonathan Dorin (Lynbrook) won in straight sets at fourth singles, 6-4, 7-6 (1). The clinching point for the Red Dragons came at third singles when Shapiro won a third set super tie breaker 10-7 to give Oneonta its 5-2 win.

Oneonta will next be in action on Tuesday, Sep. 21 when they will be at Union beginning at 4:00 p.m.
