ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team battled visiting Montclair State to a 0-0 draw this afternoon in the first semifinal game of the Div. III men's Mayor's Cup hosted by the Red Dragons. Because of the format of the tournament, there needed to be a winner, so the two teams went all the way to a shootout where the Red Hawks prevailed 5-4.
Montclair (3-1-1) held a distinct advantage in shots (30-10) and corner kicks (18-8), but junior goalkeeper,
Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn Heights), came up with 17 saves in the game for Oneonta (1-1-2).
Oneonta's best opportunity came in the first half when senior co-captain,
Jordan Flores (Schenectady), hit the cross bar in the 16th minute.
Montclair had a flurry of successive shots in the first overtime period, but none of the shots reached the goal as the Oneonta defense got in the way of each one.
Oneonta, the 2009 Mayor's Cup champion, will play in the consolation game of tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Red Dragon soccer field.
