The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team made it a clean sweep this weekend capturing the NAC West Division title along with winning all nine flights in the individual portion of the two-day event held at the Birchwood Tennis Center in Clarks Summit, Pa. Oneonta's victory in the team tournament made it back-to-back championships after winning the North Eastern Athletic Conference title last spring. Oneonta also took home the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors as senior #
Matt Steinhauser (Plainview/JFK)# and Bill May earned the honors respectively. May was selected for a second straight year. All of the flight winners in singles and doubles also earned first team All-Conference.
This spring, the six members of the NEAC, including Oneonta as an associate member in the sport of tennis, all became associate members of the NAC to form a West Division. Oneonta's division championship put them into the NAC championship next Saturday, May 1 against Castleton State, the NAC East Division winner, at the Tri-City Fitness Center in Latham, N.Y.
Oneonta easily dispensed of Keuka in the semi finals 6-0 before shutting out Penn State Berks in the championship match 5-0.
Steinhauser along with juniors #Will Sacco# and #John Taft (Queensbury/Glens Falls)# and sophomores #Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway/Lynbrook)# and #Josh Slifkin# were winners in both singles and doubles. Slifkin was the fourth singles champion and then partnered with Steinhauser to win at second doubles.
Shapiro captured the title at second singles and, partnered with Taft, won the crown at third doubles.
Taft won the championship at fifth singles.
Sacco was the champion at third singles and at first doubles with partner #Jon Dorin#.
Oneonta's final singles winner was sophomore #Dan Evans (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills)#, who won at sixth singles.
