The SUNY Oneonta softball team got a solid pitching performance from sophomore
Jessica Iuliano (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) in game 1 of a doubleheader split with Kean University today in non conference action. Iuliano threw 6-1/3 innings allowing six hits and no runs as the Red Dragons defeated the Cougars 5-0.
Oneonta (11-10) put this one away early as they scored four runs in its half of the first inning. Sophomore
Meg Beditz (Troy/Troy) led off the inning with a double to right center field and went to third on an infield single by classmate
Jillian Serraro (Hopewell Jct/John Jay), who beat the throw from third with some great hustle down the line.
Junior
Sam Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) singled to center field to drive in Beditz while moving Serraro over to second base. Serraro scored on a two-out single by freshman
Katie Kraus (North Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial), which the center fielder made an error on that allowed Voncina to score from first base. Kraus came around to score on an infield single by senior
Aly Helstrom (Montgomery/Valley Central).
Serraro finished the game with two hits while Kraus finished the game with a pair of runs batted in.
In game 2, Kean (14-8) turned the tables on the Red Dragons and shut them out 3-0. Senior Cassie Shotwell (Dunellin, NJ/Dunellin) struck out six hitters and allowed only three hits in going the distance for her eighth win of the season. Shotwell also had a pair of hits and scored one of the three runs the Cougars plated in the top of the fourth inning.
The Red Dragons will be in action again this coming Tuesday afternoon when they play at home versus King's College in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
