Box Score The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team needed to work extra this afternoon in its home opener, but it was well worth it as the took a 9-8 victory against Clarkson today in double overtime. Junior Kris Wodiska (Lake Rokonkoma/Sachem North) shot a one-hopper towards the goal that bounced up and over the Clarkson goalie into the back of the goal to end the game at the 2:29 mark of the second overtime period. The goal for Wodiska was his fourth of the game and his second during a man-up opportunity.
The win for the Red Dragons puts them at 2-0 on the early season while the visiting Golden Knights fall in its season opener.
The first half was a up-and-down half for the host Red Dragons. They led after one period, 3-0 before allowing four goals in the second period to trail at the break 4-3.
Senior Matt Harvey (Bay Shore/Islip) got Oneonta on the board at the 9:53 mark of the first period unassisted. He was followed by sophomore Ryan Gifford (Latham/Shaker) less than one minute later and Wodiska at the 8:06 mark to give Oneonta a 3-0 lead.
In the second period Clarkson battled back to tie the score at three goals apiece including a pair by sophomore Eric Gollands (Chelmsford/Chelmsford). A goal with 15 seconds to go in the period by junior Mike Simmons (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School) gave the Golden Knights a 4-3 lead at the intermission.
In the third period, Oneonta held Clarkson scoreless while putting up a pair of goals to take a 5-4 lead heading into the final period of play. After assisting on the first goal of the period, Wodiska scored his second of the game on a man-up situation for the Red Dragons.
The score went back-and-forth in the final period of play with three ties and two lead changes. A goal by freshman John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks/Chenango Forks) at the 5:55 mark gave Oneonta an 8-7 lead.
Clarkson would not go quietly, as an unassisted goal by sophomore Matt Cyr (Chesire, CT/Bridgton Academy) knotted the score at eight. Oneonta had the ball in the waning seconds of regulation, but couldn't convert.
Oneonta will have a week off before its next game on Saturday, Mar. 13 at home versus Union College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
