Oneonta outlasts Rensselaer in marathon match

Match takes over five hours to complete

     The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team defeated visiting Rensselaer 6-3 this afternoon in wintry conditions with windchill below freezing. The match took well over five hours to complete with the Red Dragons prevailing to raise its dual-match record to 8-5 overall for the 2009-10 year.
     Oneonta led 4-2 after the singles portion of the match and earned its clinching poin at third doubles. The freshmen duo of Dana Denenberg (Corlandt Manor/Hendrick Hudson) and Danielle Browarski (Colonie/Colonie) defeated the Rensselaer duo of sophomore Zosia Casterline (Farminton, MI/Farmington) and freshman Briannia Dickie (Acton, MA/Acton Regional) by the score of 8-6 to give Oneonta a 5-3 lead in the match.
     The Red Dragons won at second doulbes with the tandem of junior Emily Shannon (East Northport/Northport) and sophomore Liz Flamman (Setauket/Ward Melville), 9-7, for the team's sixth point.
     Flamman, Browarski and Denenberg also recorded victories at third, fourth and sixth singles respectively today for Oneonta. THe fourth win in singles for the Red Dragons came at the top of the lineup with junior Carly Smith (Binghamton/Binghamton) in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
     Rensselaer's two singles wins came from junior Jessica Sitzer (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) and senior Kimberly Viles (Cheektowaga/Cheektowata) at the second and fifth spots respectively.
     The Red Dragons will not play again until Saturday, April 17th, when they will be on the road to Keuka.
