Oneonta Beats Ithaca 9-7

Sophomore Chris Miles stops 15 shots in Red Dragons victory

Box Score

SUNY Oneonta sophomore Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) made his first start of the 2010 season and stopped 15 shots in helping the Red Dragons past the Ithaca Bombers by a score of 9-7 today in non-conference action. Meanwhile, on the offense, the Red Dragons were led by a pair of seniors as Steve Loesch (Massapequa/St. Anthony's) netted a pair of goals, and classmate Scott Weiner (Suffern/Suffern) had a three-point afternoon in helping lead the attack.

Ithaca (1-5) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 1:58 into the game as sophomore Tom Mongelli (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) scored off a pass from teammate Mike Lohan (Merrick/Calhoun), which turned out to be the only goal of the first quarter.

The Bombers would take a 2-0 lead at the 12:11 mark of the second quarter as junior Mike Silipo (Deerfield, MA/Williston Northampton) would score the first of what would be a three-goal game for him.

Oneonta (3-3) would get on the board at the 7:49 mark of the 2nd quarter as junior Tom Kelly (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) would score to trim the lead in half. Ithaca would answer shortly after Kelly's goal with a pair of their own with just over a minute remaining in the half.

Oneonta took advantage of an Ithaca turnover in its own end late in the quarter and the Red Dragons were able to capitalize when sophomore Blair Hanson (Fayetteville/Fayetteville Manlius) converted with just 17-seconds remaining in the half to cut the Bomber lead to 4-2 entering the intermission.

After the break Oneonta would score four of the next five goals including a pair by Loesch to give the Red Dragons its first lead of the game at 6-5. At that point of the game goalkeeper Miles and the defense would take over for Oneonta allowing just two more goals in the final 28:19 of the game. The defensive effort was led by junior Tyler Gore (Rye/Christian Brothers Academy) and Hugh O'Gorman.

In goal for the visiting Bombers was junior David Gal (Amherst, MA/Loomis Chaffee, CT) who had 26 saves in net for Ithaca including a game-high nine in the second quarter. Gal took the loss after allowing nine goals, seven of which came in the second half.

With his performance today, Miles got his first win to even his individual record at 1-1 after taking a loss in his previous relief-outing against St. John Fisher this past Saturday. The sophomore allowed only seven goals in his 60 minutes of play this afternoon.

Oneonta's next contest will be next Tuesday, March 30 at 4 p.m. against the Hamilton Continentals at All College Field.
