ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team came back from the North Country with an even split of its weekend games at Potsdam and Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons defeated Potsdam Friday night 80-71 to pick up its initial win of the season while falling at Plattsburgh today 69-60. Oneonta is now 1-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.

In its win against Potsdam on Friday night, the game was close throughout with the two teams being tied 10 times during the game. The final tie came at 67-67 before a three-point basket by senior Shane Gillette (Hurley, Kingston) broke the deadlock and put the Red Dragons ahead to stay with 2:07 remaining in the game. Oneonta would outscore the Bears 10-4 including 8-of-8 free throws by senior Troy Talbot (Brooklyn, The School for Legal Studies) to seal the victory.

Talbot finished the game with 23 points including 15-of-17 from the charity stripe. Classmate Brian Hooks (Cohoes, Shaker) contributed 23 points, hitting 8-of-11 from the field including five three-pointers.

Gillette had 17 points and six assists while senior Derek Hahn (Youngsville, Sullivan West) had a team high 11 rebounds.

Today against Plattsburgh, the two teams were tied at nine apiece around the 12 minute mark of the first half before the Cardinals asserted itself, outscoring Oneonta 18-9 over the remaining time in the opening half to take a 27-18 lead at the break.

Despite trailing by as many as 22 points in the second half, Oneonta made a late run to cut the lead back to nine points, but ran out of time.  The Red Dragons and Plattsburgh each scored 42 points in the second half.

Talbot was the high man for Oneonta with 19 points followed by Hooks, who had 13 points.

Oneonta will play its home opener this coming Tuesday night against Hartwick beginning at 8:00 p.m.
