Box Score Box Score

ONEONTA,N.Y.—The battle of the Red Dragons always seems to be an evenly matched game, and this was like any other. SUNY Oneonta was able to defeat SUNY Cortland 2-1 in overtime thanks to the leg of junior Jonathan Kowalski (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) (Glens Falls) who scored both goals for Oneonta.

The Oneonta Red Dragons wasted no time getting the ball down the field in a hurry in the first half of the game. After a battle for possession in the first five minutes of play Kowalski got his chance. Sending a long booming kick from 25 yards out, the ball sneaked over the keeper making its way into the net in the 7th minute of play putting Oneonta up 1-0.

Oneonta had a total of six shots on goal in the first half, but the play of Cortland keeper Patrick Pidgeon kept them in the game ending the half only down by one.

This time, the Red Dragons from Cortland wasted no time in the second half to get down the field. In the 47th minute of play Joe DiGirolomo passed the ball into the box from the left where Patrick Meany was able to head it past keeper Maxwell Siegelman (Roslyn Heights) to tie the game at one a piece.

With the game tied, the physical play of both teams affected the game. Both teams were awarded with numerous fouls and yellow cards. Cortland racked up a total 15 fouls, while Oneonta was marked with 9 fouls in the game.

The Oneonta offense picked up in the second half with 7 shots on goal having just missing the net multiple times. The best shot came in the 82nd minute when senior Michael Diefenbacher (Marcy) had the best opportunity of the half but Pidgeon was able to secure the ball and send the game into overtime.

In overtime it was back to Kowalski who mimicked his goal way back in the first half. After receiving a pass from sophomore Dan Scott (Hyde Park/FD Roosevelt) (Salt Point) in the middle of the field, Kowlaski took a shot from the top of the box and sent it right over Pidgeon into the back of the net winning in overtime 2-1.

Oneonta will return to the field and heated conference action Saturday October 23rd to face SUNY Oswego at 1:00 pm.
