SUNY Oneonta falls to New Paltz, 77-74

Hawks come from behind to gain road win

     New Paltz sophomore Shareef Taylor (Hyde Park/FDR) led four Hawks in double figures with a game high 23 points as he led his team to a come-from-behind win tonight on the road against SUNY Oneonta 77-74.
     New Paltz (8-7/4-4) trailed the entire game until a lay up by Jayquan Anderson (Bronx/Frederick Douglas Academy) tied the score at 56 apiece at the 13:49 mark. New Paltz put together a 12-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 68-60 lead. Nick Taldi (Merrick/Bellmore JFK) scored eight of the 12 points for New Paltz during the run.
     New Paltz built its lead to eight points with just less than six minutes to go before the Red Dragons made a last push. Oneonta (12-3/5-3) scored six unanswered points and tied the score at 74 apiece on a free throw by junior #Brian Hooks (Cohoes/Shaker)# with 2:27 remaining.
     Anderson made one of two free throws to give New Paltz the lead with 2:15 left in the contest.
     Both teams went scoreless for nearly two minutes to set up Oneonta with the ball and a chance for the lead with 21 seconds left. Junior #Troy Talbot (Brooklyn/The School for Legal Studies)# missed a lay up and a tip attempt.
     Pete Carmel (Lake Ronkonkoma/The Stony Brook School) secured the rebound and was fouled. He made his two free throws to give the Hawks a 77-74 lead with three seconds left.
     Oneonta had one last opportunity and a Hooks three point shot hit the front of the rim as time expired.
Hooks finished the game with 19 points to lead Oneonta. Talbot had 15 points and six assists. Junior #Derek Hahn (Youngsville/Sullivan West)# came off the bench to add 10 points while senior #Brian Beckford (Brooklyn/Christ the King)# added 12 points and a team high nine rebounds.
     In the first half of tonight's game, Oneonta was on fire, shooting 62 percent from the field in building a 47-38-halftime lead.
    Oneonta will not play again until this upcoming Tuesday night when they travel to Cortland to face its rival Red Dragons for a SUNYAC contest beginning at 8:00 p.m.
