SUNY Oneonta Shuts Out New Paltz 2-0

Red Dragons capture SUNYAC opener

Box Score      The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team opened its 2009 SUNYAC schedule with a 2-0 win against visiting New Paltz this afternoon. Sophomores Evan Jedynak (Malta/Ballston Spa) and Nicholas Gregg (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) each tallied a goal for the Red Dragons, who are now 6-1 overall.
The Hawks managed only four shots on goal in dropping its second straight contest as they are now 4-2-1 overall.
Jedynak scored the Red Dragons' first goal of the contest as classmate Nicholas Lange (Freeville/Dryden) slotted a pass that Jedynak carried almost too far before shooting from a tough angle on the right side of the goal. The ball ended up going over the outstretched arms of the Hawks keeper and just catching the inside of the upper left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Gregg's goal was an insurance goal in the 71st minute as he was in the right place at the right time in collecting a rebound off the keeper, who had just made a save of a shot by freshman Dan Scott (Hyde Park/FD Roosevelt). Gregg put the shot over the keeper's head where it found the back of the goal.
Despite having only the four shots in the game, two of the chances could have just as easily found the back of the goal. Just prior to Oneonta's first goal, sophomore Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill/St. Francis) headed a ball that deflected off the Oneonta keeper and appeared to be heading into the goal if it weren't for an Oneonta defender kicking it off the line to preserve the scoreless tie.
New Paltz's second threat came in the opening minute of the second half when a shot by sophomore Michael Santalesa (New Hyde Park/St. Francis Prep) had a shot that just went wide of the left post.
Oneonta will not be in action again until this Friday afternoon when they travel to the western part of the state to take on Fredonia for a 4:00 p.m. game.
