Box Score SUNY Oneonta freshman
Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac) converted his penalty kick in the shoot out portion of today's SUNYAC quarterfinal contest against Cortland to adavance the host Red Dragons into the semifinals of the conference tournament. The two teams played to an official 0-0 tie before having to play the shoot out to decide who would advance.
Oneonta (12-4-2) now advances to play top-seeded and host Plattsburgh this Friday, Nov. 6 at 3:00 p.m. Cortland (5-9-3), who was the defending conference champion, has its season end for 2009.
In an extremely entertaining match between two evenly matched squads, the scoreless tie was not indicative of the action at both ends of the field. Both teams had multiple chances from in close, but were unable to push one past either goalkeeper this afternoon.
From the outset of the contest both teams went at each other on the attack. The hosts had a couple of opportunities in the first three minutes of the contest that were set aside by Cortland keeper, Steve Axtell. Axtell finished the game with six saves including a few where he had to dive to deflect the ball out of bounds.
At the other end, Oneonta's
Jonathan Korn (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills) was up to the challenge as well. Cortland had more that a few balls that were dangerously close to going across the line, but Korn and the defense managed to keep the visiting Red Dragons off the scoreboard. Two of Cortland's 16 shots in the game had to be taken off the goal line by an Oneonta defender.
In the shoot out period Cortland missed its first two opportunities wide to the right while Oneonta made its first two. Oneonta led 3-2 with a chance to end the game when junior
Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills) had his kick stopped by Axtell.
Cortland sophomore Max Grant then converted his kick to set up the drama for Tenzer, who calmly took his kick and sent it to the lower left corner of the goal for the win.
