SUNY Oneonta Defeats Scranton 4-3

Red Dragons now prepare for SUNYAC Tournament

Box Score      Freshman Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) notched three goals today to lead the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team to a 4-3 win against visiting Scranton in the first meeting ever between the two schools. The Red Dragons will now set its sights on winning the SUNYAC tournament as they host an opening round game this Saturday against Cortland beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Fortier scored the lone goal for either team in the opening half as he converted a crossing pass from sophomore Evan Jedynak (Malta/Ballston Spa). Despite being out shot 8-6 in the first half, Oneonta (12-4-1) took its one-goal lead into the break.
Fortier and Jedynak hooked up again for Oneonta's second goal in the 66th minute. Jedynak made another crossing pass from just inside the right side of the box that found Fortier wide open for the easy touch to the back of the goal.
Less than four minutes later Oneonta found themselves knotted at two goals apiece as the Royals (10-5-2) struck for a pair of quick goals. Senior Ray Staccia (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) tallied both goals for Scranton with an assist from junior Nick Glavan (East Northport/St. Anthony's) on the game-tying goal.
In the 72nd minute Fortier put Oneonta ahead to stay on a breakaway goal that he chipped by the Scranton keeper after receiving a through ball from junior Gary Laronde (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills).
Eight minutes later sophomore Tim Sagasti (Endicott/Union-Endicott) scored the eventual game winner with an assist from junior Michael Diefenbacher (Marcy/Whitesboro).
Glavan made the game interesting in the 87th minute with an unassisted goal that cut Oneonta's lead back to one goal. The Royals ran out of time and Oneonta took the victory in its regular season finale.
