Box Score In a match up of two of the top teams in the SUNYAC, the SUNY Geneseo men's soccer team got the better of SUNY Oneonta today, taking a 3-1 win on the road. The loss for Oneonta snaps its three-game winning streak as they fall to 8-2 overall while Geneseo raises its overall record to 5-3-1. The Blue Knights also moved to 2-1 in the conference while the Red Dragons are now 3-1 in the SUNYAC.
All of the scoring in today's game came in the final 29 minutes of the contest after the two teams battled to a scoreless opening stanza.
Oneonta broke the tie in the 62nd minute of play on a pretty goal by freshman
Eric Fortier (Pleasant Valley/Arlington). The goal was set up by junior
Larry Pestana (Valhalla/Valhalla), who made a run down the right flank before sending a crossing pass along the ground where a charging Fortier one-touched it passed the Geneseo keeper for the 1-0 lead.
From that point on it was all Blue Knights as they came storming back and seized the momentum, tying the score at one apiece just under four minutes later.
Sophomore John Piaggione (East Amherst/Williamsville North) out raced the Oneonta defense to get to a pass from out of the back by senior Joey Mort (Rochester/McQuaid). Piaggione one-timed a low shot along the ground that went passed a diving
Jonathan Korn (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills) to knot the score at 1-1.
Mort got his second assist of the game on the go-ahead goal less than 15 minutes later. On a restart
after an Oneonta foul, Mort sent a ball into the box that freshman Robert Loccisano (Smithtown/Hauppauge) got his head on to redirect it by Korn for the 2-1 lead.
Geneseo added an insurance goal in the 87th minute on an unassisted goal by junior Ben Ariola (Mexico/Mexico).
Korn finished the game with four saves while his counterpart, Mike Madarasz (Smithtown/Smithtown West) matched him with four saves as well.
Oneonta will not be in action again tomorrow as they host Brockport for another SUNYAC match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
