SUNY Oneonta Defeats Nationally Ranked Hobart

Red Dragons take road win against #17 Statesman

Box Score      SUNY Oneonta sophomore Evan Jedynak (Malta/Ballston Spa) and freshman Ian Tenzer (Mahopac/Mahopac) each notched a goal this afternoon as the Red Dragons upended the 17th-ranked Hobart College soccer team 2-1 on the road. The Red Dragons improve to 10-3-1 overall with the victory while the Statesmen slip to 10-2-2.
Oneonta struck first in today's match in the 19th minute of play. Sophomore Nicholas Lange (Freeville/Dryden) sent a lead pass to Jedynak for a shot from the top right corner of the 5-yard box. Jedynak's shot snuck by Hobart sophomore goalie Charlie Hale and into the lower left corner of the net.
Oneonta took its one-goal lead into halftime.
The Red Dragons took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when as Tenzer broke loose from the Statesmen defense and took a shot from about 18 yards out that found the bottom left corner of the goal.
Hobart's goal came in the 58th minute when junior Kevin McCarthy ripped a long shot that first-year Alex Kittelberger knocked over the head of Red Dragon goalkeeper Jonathan Korn (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills). The tally marked Kittelberger's team-high fifth of the year.
The Statesmen had opportunities to score throughout the game. In the first half, they nearly scored after a corner kick from sophomore Nate Bechtold. Sophomore Tommy Hayes took a shot that Korn saved but couldn't control and the ball deflected into the crossbar. Korn was able to punch the ball out before Hobart could capitalize. Immediately after, Bechtold took a shot on the loose ball, but Korn again came up with the stop.
The Statesmen held a huge 15-2 advantage in corner kicks, and owned a 19-6 edge in shots, including 15 in the second half.
Hale finished with two saves on the day, while Korn stopped five shots for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta will be back in action on Oct. 23 when the team travels to Oswego for a SUNYAC match at 4 p.m.
