ONEONTA, N.Y. - A second half goal from Clarkson's Maddison Haver a minute into the second half gave the Golden Knights a 2-1 win over the Oneonta women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon to begin the Mayor's Cup. The Red Dragons fall to 0-1-1 overall, while the Golden Knights move to 1-1-0.
Clarkson struck first, with junior goalkeeper Emily Hardison (Coram, NY/Longwood) making a save off a shot from Callie Abel. Junior Sara Kealey (Seaford, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) responded with a shot on goal that Clarkson's Kenzie Roth saved. Roth stopped back-to-back shots from Kealey to keep the Red Dragons off the board in the sixth minute.
The Golden Knights scored at 10:00 with Aviana Johnson finding the net off a pass from Thea Armistead to take a 1-0 lead. Oneonta responded soon after when sophomore Bella Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) scored from senior Caroline Schimitsch (Little Neck, NY/The Mary Louis Academy) to tie 1-1 at 15:55. Neither side scored again in the first, and Oneonta held a slight 10-9 shot advantage.
After the Oneonta defense blocked a Kate Walsh shot, Rachael Matthews collected the ball and dished it off to Haver for the lead-taking goal at 46:09. The Red Dragon offense picked up with six shots on goal in a ten-minute span that were all saved by Roth. Oneonta limited the Clarkson offense, but could not find the back of the net to equalize.
Hardison finished with six saves, while Roth had 13. Â
Oneonta outshot Clarkson 21-16 and held a 10-5 corner kick advantage.
The Red Dragons conclude the Mayor's Cup on Sunday, September 6, at noon against New Paltz.
