ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's soccer team bounced back after Saturday's loss with a 1-0 win over New Paltz to conclude the 2026 Mayor's Cup. The win marks the first victory over the Hawks (1-2-0) since 2019, as the Red Dragons (1-1-1) finish as the Mayor's Cup runner-up. Clarkson won the tournament with a 1-0 victory at Harkwick.
Oneonta goalkeeper Emily Hardison (Coram, NY/Longwood) stopped an early Hawks' shot from Soledad O'Hara Nunes and then made another stop from a Grace Lien attempt at 10:19. The Red Dragons responded in the 20th minute when junior Devyn Kelly (Wappingers Falls, NY/Beacon) struck the bottom center of the New Paltz goal, but goalie Jess Centeri made the save. At 23:45, sophomore Violet Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) passed back to senior Brenna Mast (Croghan, NY/Beaver River) at the top center of the box. Mast fired on goal and struck the crossbar, and the ball bounced back into the net to take a 1-0 lead. Oneonta nearly scored again in the final seconds of the first half when sophomore Bella Mattoni (Valhalla, NY/Valhalla) juked through multiple defenders and ripped a shot. Centeri made a clutch save to keep it a one-score contest heading into the break.
Oneonta controlled the second half, outshooting New Paltz 26-6. Kelly took back-to-back shots but was unable to break through, and senior Gianna Hanner (Ridge, NY/Longwood) had a shot turned aside by Centeri at 81:16. The one goal proved to be enough as Oneonta held on for the win.
The Red Dragons finished with a 26-6 shot advantage, while the Hawks were 8-2 on corner kicks.
Hardison records her first-career shutout with three saves, while Centeri made 11 stops.
Additionally, sophomore B. Mattoni, senior Dominique DiOrio (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), and freshman Lily Martin (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) were named to the all-tournament team.
Oneonta next travels to face Skidmore on Saturday, September 12, at noon.
