ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team opened the first day of the Red Dragon Invitational on Friday at Dewar Arena, going 1-1 on the day. The Red Dragons posted a convincing 3-0 victory over Utica before dropping a 3-0 decision to Wheaton (MA).
Oneonta opened the day with a dominant performance against Utica, earning a 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 victory. The Red Dragons hit .244 as a team while holding Utica to a .022 attack percentage. Oneonta also recorded 41 kills compared to 27 for the Pioneers.
Sophomore Corynna Manjos (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) led the Red Dragons offensively with seven kills on 17 attacks while adding two service aces and a block for 9.5 points. Junior Shea Landversicht (Greenville, NY/Greenville) was also highly efficient, recording six kills on 12 attacks with just one error for a .417 hitting percentage. She added a service ace, a solo block, and an assisted block.
Senior Emma Morretta (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) contributed four kills on nine attacks while hitting .444, while senior Keira Welsh (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) added three kills with no errors on 14 attacks. Sophomore Layla Pertchik (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) directed the offense with 10 assists, while junior Hailey Herrera (Brooklyn, NY/Park Slope Collegiate) added three assists.
Defensively, Abigail Harper (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) paced Oneonta with eight digs, while senior Lillian Slattery (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) and sophomore Cadence Meltz (Highland, NY/Highland) each recorded five. The Red Dragons also received six digs from Manjos.
The Red Dragons carried the momentum into their second match of the day against Wheaton (MA), but the Lyons came away with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-8 victory.
Oneonta battled throughout the first two sets, falling by just three points in each. The Red Dragons struggled offensively in the third set as Wheaton pulled away to complete the sweep.
Manjos once again led Oneonta with four kills, while Landversicht added four kills and a team-best .188 hitting percentage. Sophomore Kayla Kean (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa Central) recorded five kills, while Emma finished with four kills. Welsh contributed two kills and five digs.
Harper led the defensive effort with 10 digs, while Slattery and Manjos each recorded five. Oneonta's offense was led by 17 assists from Herrera and five assists from Pertchik.
Following Friday's results, Oneonta moved to 1-2 overall on the season. The Red Dragons will conclude the Red Dragon Invitational Saturday at Dewar Arena starting at 10 a.m.
