COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Oneonta baseball team erupted for a season-high offensive performance on Tuesday afternoon, rolling past Cobleskill, 21-6, on the road.
Oneonta (17-13) wasted no time setting the tone, scoring twice in the opening inning before breaking the game open with a four-run second. The Red Dragons continued to pile on throughout the afternoon, scoring in eight of nine innings and finishing with 21 runs on 20 hits.
A key early moment came in the second inning when sophomore Zachary Rowe (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) delivered a three-run double to cap a four-run frame, pushing the lead to 6-0. Oneonta added another in the third before exploding for six runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Rowe, senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), and junior Ryan Donovan (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) to extend the advantage to 12-1.
The Red Dragons' lineup produced contributions up and down the order. Sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) led the way with a 4-for-6 performance, while Donovan went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and two doubles. Rowe drove in four runs, and Jacoby added three RBI, including a two-run double in the fourth.
Senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) launched a two-run home run in the sixth inning, and junior Joe LoMonaco (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) added a pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh to continue the offensive onslaught. Senior Gavin Carlucci (Garrison, NY/Walter Panas) chipped in with an RBI triple during that same inning.
On the mound, freshman Christian Danzilo (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) got the start, allowing just one run over three innings while striking out one. After a brief fourth-inning rally by Cobleskill, senior Martin Thorsland (Maryland, NY/Milford Central) (2-1) earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to stabilize the game. Thorsland surpassed 100 career strikeouts as well. The bullpen combined to limit Cobleskill to just one run over the final five innings.
Cobleskill (11-14) was led by Ryan Lansing, who recorded two hits and three RBI, while Tony Woodie added a solo home run. However, the Fighting Tigers were unable to keep pace with Oneonta's relentless offense.
The Red Dragons closed out the game with two more runs in the ninth, capping a dominant all-around performance as they secured the victory.
Oneonta next returns to SUNYAC play at Plattsburgh on Saturday, April 18 at 3 p.m.
