PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Oneonta built an early lead but couldn't hold off a late push, falling 7–6 in 10 innings to Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta falls to 17-14 overall and 5-6 in the SUNYAC, while Plattsburgh moves to 10-12 and 1-9 in the conference.
The Red Dragons jumped out in the second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to plate three unearned runs. After singles from senior Brendan Duffy (Southold, NY/Southold Jr./Sr.) and sophomore Ryan Cronin (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), senior Nick Jacoby (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) reached on a fielder's choice that brought in the first run. Senior Matt Sandoval (West Islip, NY/West Islip Senior) followed with an RBI groundout, and senior Anthony Loia (Hopewell Junction, NY/Arlington) reached on an error that allowed another run to score for a 3–0 advantage.
Oneonta added another unearned run in the fourth when juniorSean Clinton (New City, NY/Clarkstown South) scored on a wild pitch after reaching on an error, extending the lead to 4–0.
Plattsburgh responded with a big fourth inning, scoring four runs on four hits to even the game. A two-run single from Braeden Calkins and an RBI double from Jackson Pam highlighted the rally.
The Red Dragons regained control in the sixth. Clinton drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on sophomore Zachary Rowe's (Hudson, NY/Taconic Hills) RBI single. Later in the inning, Jacoby was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run, giving Oneonta a 6–4 lead.
However, Plattsburgh answered again in the seventh. Pam delivered his second RBI double of the day, and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Martin tied the game at 6–6.
Both teams were held scoreless through the eighth and ninth innings. Oneonta threatened in the 10th with a leadoff single by sophomore Joseph Monserrat (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central), who later stole second, but the Red Dragons were unable to bring him home.
In the bottom of the 10th, Plattsburgh ended it on a solo home run to right field by Colin Ross.
Monserrat and Cronin each recorded two hits to lead Oneonta offensively, while Rowe and Jacoby each drove in a run. Clinton scored twice and reached base three times.
On the mound, freshman Aiden Chartrand (Harrisville, NY/Harrisville) started and allowed four runs over 3.1 innings. Junio Lukas Jachens (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall Central) provided 3.2 innings of relief, giving up two runs, while freshman Andrew Dillon (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) took the loss after surrendering the walk-off homer in the 10th.
Plattsburgh finished with 14 hits in the game, led by Pam (3-for-5, two doubles, three RBI) and Ross (3-for-5, home run, two RBI).
Oneonta will look to bounce back in Sunday's doubleheader against the Cardinals at noon.
