CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Oneonta softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer midway through their Spring Break trip, Wednesday afternoon. Oneonta had the lead early in game one before Pomona-Pitzer took control for a 10-2 final in five innings, then the Sagehens secured game two, 12-0, in five innings to improve to 7-13 on the season. The results moved the Red Dragons to 2-8 overall.Â
Senior
Jaime Cardello (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) and sophomore
Sophia Camacho (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) finished the day 2-for-5. Camacho had a double, scored a run, and stole a base, while Cardello stole a base. Sophomore
Anna Spicciatie (Oakdale, N.Y./Connetquot) ended the doubleheader 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
Game One: Oneonta 2, Pomona-Pitzer 10 (5 Innings)
The Red Dragons got things rolling with two runs in the first inning. Camacho led the game off with a double down the right field line. Freshman
Ella Kean (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) was up next, and she scored Camacho with a double to left center. Sophomore
Kayla Kean (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) advanced E. Kean to third with a single to center, which set her up to be brought home on a sacrifice fly from senior
Abigail Silliman (Rensselaer, N.Y./Columbia).
Pomona-Pitzer scored their first run in the bottom half of the first inning when Kylie Liu hit a home run. In the bottom of the second, the Sagehens added three more runs for a 4-2 lead with a pair of RBI singles and a first and third double-steal attempt.
In the third inning, Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead to 6-2 off a couple of fielding errors. The next inning, Liu hit a two-run home run for her second of the game, then the Sagehens made it 9-2 with an RBI single.
The game went in the Mercy Run rule at the bottom of the fifth inning when Pomona-Pitzer scored on a throwing error.
E. Kean finished the game 1-for-1 with an RBI double, two walks, and a stolen base. Camacho went 1-for-3 with a double, and K. Kean was 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
Senior
Anna Torgersen (Chester, NJ/Mendham) (2-2) was tagged with the loss after pitching 2.0 innings, striking out one, and allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits. Freshman
Caitlin McTiernan (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) pitched 2.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed six unearned runs on eight hits.
Audrey Reimers (4-9) pitched the complete game for the Sagehens, struck out one, and allowed two runs on four hits.
Game Two: Oneonta 12, Pomona-Pitzer 0 (5 Innings)
Pomona-Pitzer earned their first run in game two with an RBI double in the first inning. In the bottom of the second, they added three more runs to their lead off a one-run single and two-run double.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Sagehens put the game away with an eight-run rally to go up 12-0.
Offensively for the Red Dragons, the team got runners in scoring position in all five innings, though they came up short each time. In the top of the first, Camacho worked a walk and stole second, then Spicciatie singled through the left side to advance Camacho to third. Spicciatie stole second to get two runners in scoring position, but the Sagehens responded and closed out the inning.
Cardello went 2-for-2 in game two with a pair of singles and made her way to second base in the second and fourth inning, however she could not advance any closer to home. Camacho was able to get to second in the third and fifth innings for Oneonta, but she was unable to brought in.
Sophomore
Bridget Barry (East Patchogue, N.Y.) (0-1) received the loss after pitching 2.0 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits. Torgersen pitched 1.1 innings, struck out one, and allowed five runs, four earned, on three hits, and freshman
Caitlin McTiernan (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) pitched 0.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits.
Mia Lopez (2-1) got the win for Pomona-Pitzer after pitching the complete game, striking out six and allowing four hits.
The Red Dragons continue their Spring Break play on Friday, March 20, with a doubleheader against No. 19 nationally ranked Chapman starting at 3 pm pacific, 6 pm eastern.
