CANTON, N.Y. -- The Oneonta men's tennis team dropped their non-conference match on the road against St. Lawrence, 6-1, Sunday afternoon. Senior
William Schmid (Yonkers/Salesian HS) won Oneonta's match point in a split set victory in singles play. The decision moved the Red Dragons record 5-3 overall and improved the Saints to 1-1 this season.
On the No. 2 singles court, Schmid went up against St. Lawrence's Preston Mcarthy in a back-and-forth clash. Mcarthy earned the first set, 6-4, before the Red Dragon outlasted the Saint for a 7-5 second set win. Instead of the 10-point tiebreaker, the two played a traditional third set, where Schmid overpowered Mcarthy for the victory, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Sophomore
Peter Pitaleff (Garrison, N.Y./Highland Falls Fort Montgomery) also went into a third set in his singles match against Will de Chabert-Ostland on the No. 4 court. After getting tripped up in the first set, Pitaleff had the upper hand and held off de Chabert-Ostland from forcing a tiebreaker in the second set for a 7-5 win, which forced the tiebreaking third set. Unfortunately, de Chabert-Ostland took the set for the match 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
